Jane Birkin & Serge Gainsbourg - Je T'aime... Moi Non Plus

Back

I'll delete all the repeated or clueless comments, the rest (including swearwords, critics, opinions) will be kept. In 1968 Gainsbourg had written "Je t'aime, moi non plus", an explicitly erotic song which he had recorded with Brigitte Bardot. After the pair's relationship had ended, Bardot begged Gainsbourg not to release the recording as a single and Gainsbourg, the perfect gentleman, respected her wishes. However, in 1969 Jane recorded the notorious song as a duet with Gainsbourg and it appeared on the pair's joint album "Jane Birkin Serge Gainsbourg". When "Je t'aime moi non plus" was released as a single later that year it caused an absolute scandal. Indeed, Gainsbourg's erotic lyrics and Jane's passionate whispering totally outraged public opinion. The international press attacked the song's "lewd" message, radios banned it from their playlists and the Vatican went so far as to issue a statement condemning the immoral nature of the song. In short, "Je t'aime moi non plus" benefited from a huge amount of free publicity and rocketed straight to the top of the charts, selling around a million copies in the space of just a few months. Needless to say, Gainsbourg and Birkin became the most scandalous couple of the year and their relationship became the subject of intense media scrutiny.

Autumn 1969 Pre-sea training ship 'Worcester' Greenhithe Kent, 100 17 year olds, Brown Bear Pub, this on the juke box, no money, barmans daughter (about 30 years old) giving us the occasional flash of her knickers, Jackie and Jenny, the 2 local village girls, giving some of us the odd SNOG. These are the memories I have of this wonderously sexy song. Great to recall those times. Mawford,Morgan, Jarvis, Isherwood, etc. Fore' division. Magic days.

absolutely fantastic song. i love it. used to listen to it a thousand times a second when i was 16. and stop swearing around you pharisees, puritans and other hypocrits calling themselves christians or something. you are like the graves, white and beautiful on the outside but full of bones and dirt inside.

Supposedly, it's notorious for being a pop song that rhapsodizes about the pleasures of anal intercourse. The curious will want to locate a copy of Gainsbourg's film with Birkin and Joe Dallesandro by the same title. (I found a poorly mastered version online.) Not the most pleasant film by any stretch of the imagination, but certainly an intriguing one that gives visual representation to Gainsbourg's obsessions. Makes one miss the more sexually liberated atmosphere of the 70s.
